1. Safety first: Before you disturb any painted surface, you should think about the possibility of
lead. Lead paint additives were phased out in the 1970s and 80s. If you suspect lead is present
in any paint, you can find information about safety precautions and testing at www.epa.gov/lead,
or by calling the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD. Even with newer surfaces, I
find that a dust mask is always in order when sanding. Your lungs will thank you.

2. Sanding: Not all pieces will require sanding before repainting. My mantra is to leave well
enough alone when dealing with old paint surfaces. If, however, the paint is chipped, peeling,
crackling, or has other problems, you might not be able to avoid the sandpaper. A small electric
hand sander is my best friend for these situations. A very light sanding (really just scuffing)
can help your new paint adhere to old oil paint or a glossy surface.

3. Prep, prep, prep: The number one reason for paint failures is incorrect preparation. Time spent
on prep will ensure you get a good result in the end. Make sure the surface is completely clean
and dust free before you ever get the paint out of the can. If you have sanded the surface, remove
dust with a tack cloth. This is a small piece of cheesecloth soaked in wax, available at your
local home improvement store in the paint section. They cost around one dollar

If it all feels right, then stay with it and see it through. But if you get even just a tiny twinge of something not quite right, be prepared to walk away.

The only places I have gone camping are in Utah, but there is such diversity in Utah's climate and landscape, that I experienced a variety of different camping experiences. A camping hobby is great in Utah and other outdoor states. As I boy scout, I used to go on the Klondike every year. This was a winter camp out in the Utah Mountains. It would get freezing up there at night. A couple of times when I went, I slept in a tent. The tent was freezing. A nice sleeping bag kept me warm, but the air was too cold to breathe. By morning my lungs felt like they had sand in them. My scout leader, another scout, and I got up a little early to make a fire, because we were so cold. The scout kept complaining about how his feet hurt all morning, until the sun came up and then we realized he had his boots on the wrong feet. I think every year that I went to the Klondike, I fell through the ice on the lake and got wet. The warmest I have been at the Klondike was when I built a snow cave to live in. You just make a large pile of snow and pack it down. Then you dig out the inside large enough for a couple people to sleep in there. If you just have a candle, it will stay very warm inside the cave. The snow acts as insulation to the cold air outside. Snow caving should definitely be added to your camping hobbies list.

I have camped in the high Uintah Mountains of Utah. My grandparents have a cabin up there that we have stayed in often. Now that I am older, I am a much bigger fan of cabin camping. You can just light the wood burning stove to keep the whole cabin warm. We had an electric generator to have electricity in the cabin. It might not sound much like camping to some people. We were up in the mountains alone though, and cooked our food on a campfire and got our water from a spring.

I have also camped in other areas of the High Uintah Mountains, without a cabin. Once I went on a fifty mile hike through the mountains. It took us five days going ten miles a day. We had to carry our tents, sleeping bags and all of the necessary supplies for food and other things, through the mountains for five days. Which reminds me; do not ever let your mom pack your backpack if you are going on a trip like that, unless you want to carry whole boxes of cereal and other things that are not useful on a long hike. When I hiked to King's Peak, the highest peak in Utah, my mom packed my backpack and once I got to our base camp, I found in my pack a large iron skillet to cook on that weighed a ton, a whole loaf of bread, a large jar of jelly and a large jar of peanut butter. To say the least, I was not a happy camper after I realized I had just lugged a cast iron frying pan up the mountain.

I have also camped in the deserts of Southern Utah. There is no end to the scenery and variety of landscape there, from arches to the Grand Canyon along with Goblin Valley to Lake Powell. There are also the large canyons with the Green River and the Colorado River carving through them. Find your camping gear at your online hobby store and more.

1. Check with your local gardening center or florist for the best type of roses to grow in you climate. If you are a

2. When planting roses, you want to pick a spot that is well lit in the morning. You also want an area that is sunlit
for at least 6 hours a day. Roses need a great deal of light if they are to grow properly. If you live in a really hot
climate though, you will probably get the best results by not planting your roses in direct sunlight.

3. Pick an area that has plenty of well drained soil. Great soil has a PH level where the amount of acid in the soil
is at about 5.5-7.0. You can get a testing kit for your soil at any garden center.

4. Organic matter like manure or lime helps to nourish the roots of your roses. You should soak the roots in water or
puddle clay for many minutes, and cut off any roots ends that are broken.

5. The first 3-4 weeks after planting your roses, you should water them often. Usually this is when the top 2 inches
of soil is dry. Roses need a lot of hydration and food to remain healthy.

6. Four weeks after planting, you should start soaking the bed every 2 weeks or so. You should do this in the morning
for the best results.

7. Begin fertilization approximately 3 months after planting. Use 3-6 inches of mulch to control the moisture,
temperature, and to stops weeds from coming up. Mulch also helps to lock in the vital nutrients your roses need in
order to remain healthy.

8. Planting in the Spring is the best.

9. You want to plant your roses in an area that is well circulated with air. Your roses will not grow in an enclosed
or tight area.

10. Dig a hole that is two times bigger than the amount of space that your roses take up. It makes it easier to plant
them and creates a spaced area for them to grow with freedom. Poor circulation for your roses can cause fungal
diseases. Using a larger hole also makes it easier for you to pull them up later and pot them if you would like.

Aikido is one such peaceful but popular form of martial arts. The idea behind Aikido is to disarm or subdue the attacker so that you can be safe. Aikido does not propagate injuring or killing of the opponent or attacker. Aikido is taught in dojos and these are found all over the country. You enroll and then as you learn you will move up in the order.

The first techniques that beginners are taught is like a square. Then as you master these you move up to a triangle and then to a circle. It does take months to reach the level of circle and you will need a lot of practice and dedication to get there. The final objective is to be able to use all the techniques effortlessly so that in case of more than one opponent you have the energy to deal with them.

It is not possible to compare the trained moves of grips, falls and holds that are done in the training center to what happens out on the street. Chances are that your opponent may not be trained in martial arts and so the moves he uses will be very different from what you know. Your training has to be such that you are prepared for anything. The best way to test your combat skills is to take part in the competitions that are held regularly by various dojos.

Practice sessions and competitions should be such that you reduce the tempo of the attack on the opponent. Use your speed and swiftness for the real battle out on the streets. You just may face an attacker also trained in the martial arts and here it will be the effective use of your mind that will ensure you come out safe.

Aikido has some effective secrets and it is these that will help you in a combat for life type of a situation. Try hand eye coordination, your wrist flexibility, speed and your breathing.

An old saying on the lines of there being no gain without pain holds very true for those learning Aikido. This is a given in Aikido because it is the one who has that extra competitive edge who will be the victor in any encounter. Guidance by senior students and the Sensei will ensure that the learner has faith in his own abilities and believes that he will be master of this art one day.
